Coca-Cola HBC Italia and ContourGlobal inaugurate a cogeneration energy system to cut Co2 emissions by 66%

Coca-Cola HBC Italia and ContourGlobal, an international energy operating and development company, inaugurate an innovative cogeneration plant at the Nogara bottling facility outside of Verona.

Nogara (Verona), June 5th 2010 – To mark World Environment Day, Coca-Cola HBC Italia and ContourGlobal, an international energy operating and development company, inaugurate an innovative cogeneration plant at the Nogara bottling facility outside of Verona.

The plant, with a power output of 75 million kilowatt hours, will allow Coca-Cola HBC Italia to reduce CO2 emissions by as much as 66% and increase energy efficiency by up to 83% versus traditional power generation. €22 million has been invested in the project.

The Undersecretary of State, Gianni Letta and the President of the Senate Environment Commission Antonio d’Alì recognised the importance of these initiatives for the environment and reiterated the commitment of the Government and of the Parliament to develop alternative energies.

Ulrik Nehammer, Managing Director of Coca-Cola HBC Italia said, “This is the first of three cogeneration plants that we are building in Italy and it highlights our responsibility to the environment, to the region and to the people of Veneto. But it is not our only commitment to sustainability. In the coming months we will be introducing photovoltaic panels in all production sites across the country, including here in Nogara where we have been part of the community for the past 35 years”.

Brandt, President and Chief Executive Officer of ContourGlobal said, ’’We are successfully working with Coca-Cola Hellenic on a number of innovative energy projects as part of its sustainability initiative. We are honoured by the trust bestowed upon ContourGlobal as evidenced by the announcement of the solar power projects at all Hellenic’s Italian sites”.

In a forum at the opening event, Andrea Bolla, President of Confindustria Verona, and Aldo Fumagalli Romario, President of the Commission for Sustainable Development of Confindustria stressed the importance and interest of Italian business in climate friendly technologies.

Coca-Cola Hellenic and ContourGlobal will build 15 cogeneration plants in 12 countries as well as the solar energy facilities. This will significantly cut the company’s CO2 emissions in production while increasing cost efficiency.
